The rain had been falling for three days, nearly the entire time that Sergeant Gibson, a soldier in the service of the North American Imperial Confederation, had spent hiding in the ruined and slowly-flooding bunker. He had never meant to cower so long in the dank, fetid corner he occupied, but he had fallen into the mossy edifice as he had fled in bare-eyed panic from the horror that had torn his squad to shreds. That fall had cracked his ankle something fierce, and he’d nearly bit off his own tongue trying to keep himself from screaming as he’d dragged himself into the darkest, deepest recess of the bunker to hide himself from that THING. That awful, slavering THING that still, three days later, stalked outside. He had never seen anything like it. Couldn’t even tell what part of it to SHOOT at when it had made itself known to his squad. Not that it mattered. He and his men had emptied their clips into it, and the beast had hardly even seemed to notice.
